This canvas depicts the Polish paratroopers that landed in drop zone K, near Driel, on the 21st of September 1944. There they were ambushed by the Germans, who opened fire right away with machine guns and mortars. After touchdown, the soldiers had to cross the Rhine using only five inflatable rafts, which they did six times in total. During the crossing, eleven of them died and twenty-three were wounded. The figures on the painting are as yet unaware of this; they are still preparing for the journey in England, folding the rafts.
